Paper maps

A palette on a named stock — dune, porcelain, greige, seaglass, gold leaf, a night plate. The sheet and the colour, which is most of what a print somebody actually hangs is.

Drawn by hand

Pencil, biro, crayon, felt-tip, sanguine, charcoal, a stipple, a cross-hatch, a wash of ink — the map with a mark on it you can see was made.

Charts & atlases

Maps pretending to be a particular kind of document: a sounding chart, an ordnance sheet, a hand-tinted atlas plate, an engraved globe.

Plans

A city’s plan, printed: black ink on white, chalk on black and drafting blue — and the places whose plan is the picture, from star forts to radial fans.

The land itself

Where the subject is the ground rather than a city — a massif, a fjord, a volcano, the bowl a capital sits in — worked as relief, as contour lines, or as a surveyed sheet.

Map styles

Every base-map look designed one at a time — drawn, printed and posted — one city each and nothing on top: the styles themselves, before anyone paints.

Abstract

The map taken away until only shapes are left — street lines, blocks, land and water — then painted as a composition rather than as a place.
